Campbell County commissioner says mayor needs to do his job

A Campbell County commissioner says funding set aside for the animal shelter is not being used.

Commissioner Adrion Baird says the county budgeted more than $80,000 in 2007 to hire an animal control officer and purchase a new vehicle. He says county Mayor Jerry Cross is in control of the money, but so far hasn't spent a dime.

We spent the day in Campbell County talking to Commissioner Baird about the situation.

We also talked with the animal control officer in LaFollette, who says the number of calls in the county is putting a strain on the city. He says he's tried talking to Mayor Cross about the budgeted money, but he changes the subject.

We tried to talk to Mayor Cross, but he had no comment.

Commissioner Baird says he's concerned if something isn't done soon, the shelter may never see the money.

Shelby Baker investigates why the mayor is not taking action. Click here to read the complete report.

Campbell County Animal Shelter

Campbell County Mayor Jerry Cross has not done his job as supervisor of the Animal Shelter. He has not carried out the requirement that the Humane Society of Campbell County be involved in running the Animal Shelter. Mayor Jerry Cross should be held accountable for his lack of supervision of the Animal Shelter. Tax money is being wasted and he should be required to tell Camapbell County citizens what he is doing to prevent the continued abuse and neglect of innocent animals.
